Recycling and Waste Reduction

  • Placed numerous recycling containers in easily-accessible places, such as the hotel lobby, for guests to properly dispose of their waste.
  • Using recycled paper products with a minimum of 10% post-consumer waste for most print production.
  • Identified printer cartridges as controllable elements, leading to recycling and purchasing practices that support socially responsible cartridges.
  • Separate used cooking oils to be collected by manufacturers who reuse oils in new consumer products.
  • Collect and store more than 1,000 gallons of motor oil each year from the vehicle maintenance area and use it to fuel heaters in the snowmaking maintenance area.
  • Salvage construction materials and car parts for reuse or send off as scrap metal.
  • Currently switching to 100% recycled toilet paper and 45% recycled material hand towels.
 
Energy Conservation
  • Installed the SolarBee solar panel in Lake Tahoe, to help temper the water for more efficient snowmaking
  • Replaced numerous lighting fixtures and more than 3,000 inefficient T12 fluorescent light bulbs in favor of T8 light bulbs.
  • Converted 3,344 incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent reducing the average wattage used form 75 to 25.
  • Installed motion sensor light switches in meeting rooms and janitorial closets.
  • Converted 300 exit signs from 40 watts to 1 watt bulbs.
  • Added six inches of insulation to mountaintop maintenance buildings to prevent excessive heat loss.
  • Replaced more than 418 hotel room patio doors with insulated versions and weather stripping.
  • New insulated doors were installed throughout the Ski Lodge and the indoor pool area.
  • Upgraded numerous boilers with newer high-efficiency boilers.
 
Water Usage
  • To reduce the amount of water consumption, replaced 418 showerheads to low-flow models, reducing average flow from five gallons per minute to two and a half.
  • Installed low-volume toilets in all hotel rooms.
  • Encourage guests to use towel and washcloths more than once and giving them the option of having their sheets replaced after their stay is compete.
  • Developed a potable water system to recycle water by treating and returning it to drainage areas to recharge the sources.
 
Snowmaking and Slope Activities
  • Created a virtually closed loop water system for snowmaking.
    • Captured in a series of collector ponds at the base of the mountain, which are filled from rain, run-off and melting snow
  • Installed energy-efficient, low-emission air compressors
  • Developed snow guns to achieve the most efficient water to air ratio in the industry and significantly lower the need for compressed air.
  • Identified areas to run low-energy, gravity-fed snow guns to make snow without operating pumps.
 
Paper Usage
  • Purchase and support post-consumer products
  • Eliminated the use of Styrofoam products in favor of biodegradable products.
  • Replacing disposable utensils, plates and cups with reusable china in the employee cafeteria.
 
Cleaning Products
  • Implemented the use of saltwater solutions
  • Ordered hand-dryers for public restrooms to be installed later this summer.
